Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with Chief Justice BR Gavai, who was allegedly attacked by a lawyer inside the courtroom, and condemned the incident, saying that it has “angered every Indian”.

During a court session before the bench led by the CJI, a lawyer allegedly approached the dais and tried to remove his shoe, apparently intending to throw it at Gavai, but security intervened and stopped him.

“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,” said PM Modi.

PM Modi appreciated the “calm” displayed by Justice Gavai during the incident, noting that it reflected his commitment to justice and the principles of the Constitution.

A lawyer present at the scene told ANI that the man was shouting, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan).

Justice Gavai, however, remained composed and urged the courtroom to maintain focus. He remarked that such incidents did not distract him before allowing the proceedings to continue.

The episode comes shortly after the CJI had made remarks in a separate case concerning the restoration of a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho.

While dismissing that case, he had questioned the petitioners, suggesting they approach the deity directly and highlighting that the site was under the Archaeological Survey of India’s jurisdiction.

The comments had sparked widespread debate on social media, with critics accusing the CJI of hurting religious sentiments.

Congress leader Sonia Gandhi also condemned the incident, saying that attack was not just on him but on the Constitution as well.

“No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself. It is an assault not just on him but on our Constitution as well. Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious but the nation must stand in solidarity with him unitedly with a deep sense of anguish and outrage,” she said in a statement.
