Hours after actor-politician Vijay reached out to the families of the Karur stampede victims through WhatsApp video calls, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party chief has now sought permission to visit Karur.

In an email to the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP), Vijay mentioned that he wished to extend his condolences to the families of those killed in the tragedy, in person.

On Tuesday, Vijay, interacting with the affected families virtually, had assured them of his support.

The TVK chief has been facing flak from certain sections for not visiting the affected families in person.

Speaking to one of the families, Vijay consoled a mother, saying, “I am like your son”.

Earlier, news agency PTI had quoted sources as saying that it was not clear if Vijay would visit Karur. However, there were reports that he had asked the party members to reach out to the affected families.

The stampede in Karur on September 27, during Vijay’s political rally, killed 41 people and injured over 60.

Later, the police noted that the rally saw a turnout of 27,000, nearly three times the expected 10,000 participants.

Police also blamed a seven-hour delay by Vijay in reaching the venue for the tragedy.

On October 3, the Madras High Court formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.

VIJAY SEEKS INDEPENDENT PROBE IN THE KARUR TRAGEDY

On Tuesday, Vijay filed a plea in the Supreme Court, seeking an impartial investigation led by a former top-court judge into the Karur stampede.

The plea, filed through advocates Dixita Gohil, Pranjal Agarwal, and Yash S Vijay, has challenged the Madras High Court’s October 3 order constituting an SIT to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

On October 10, the Supreme Court will hear a plea challenging the Madras High Court order refusing a CBI probe into the Karur stampede.

A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran took note of the appeal of BJP leader Uma Anandan, who sought a CBI probe into the stampede.
