More than 200 people in northwest Delhi reported symptoms of food poisoning on Tuesday after consuming buckwheat flour (kuttu atta) during Navratri fasting, police said.

Residents from localities including Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar complained of stomach-related issues early in the morning.

According to reports, calls began reaching the Jahangirpuri police station around 6:10 am, following which emergency teams were dispatched.

Patients were taken to BJRM Hospital, where the chief medical officer confirmed that over 200 individuals had visited the emergency ward since morning.

Hospital officials said all patients were stable, and none required admission.

The incident sparked panic in the affected neighbourhoods, as many residents were observing Navratri fasts.

Police began sensitising shopkeepers and residents through beat staff and public address systems, urging caution and calm.

The case has been referred to the Delhi government’s Food Department, which has initiated an investigation into the source and quality of the flour.

“We are coordinating with food safety and health officials. Awareness drives are being conducted in the community to prevent further cases,” a police officer said.

Officials confirmed that food samples have been collected for testing, and strict action will be taken if contamination is established.
