Tesla begins India journey with 60 deliveries; trails BMW, Mercedes in premium EV segment

Tesla’s much-anticipated entry into India has begun on a modest but promising note, with the US electric vehicle (EV) major delivering 60 units of its Model Y SUV in September, marking its first full month of sales after opening bookings in July, as per a report by Financial Express.

While the figure is a fraction of Tesla’s global performance — where it typically sells over 600 cars within four hours — industry analysts say the number is broadly aligned with sales of premium luxury EVs in India, indicating early traction in a market still developing at the higher end.

Racing ahead with the competitors

According to Vahan data, BMW led the premium EV segment in September with 307 units, followed by Mercedes-Benz (95 units) and Volvo (22 units). Vietnamese entrant VinFast, despite pricing its models aggressively at around ₹17 lakh, managed to register only six units — all dealership test-drive cars, with customer deliveries yet to begin. Against this backdrop, Tesla’s single-model sales of 60 units, priced at nearly ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), place it competitively close to European luxury rivals. Tesla currently offers the Model Y in rear-wheel drive and long-range variants in India. Bookings for the SUV have crossed 600 units so far, though the figure falls short of internal projections. Initially, Tesla had planned to utilise its annual import quota of 2,500 units, but subdued demand has prompted the company to revise its 2025 target to 350–500 units.

Industry observers say the tempered response reflects the brand’s high pricing and lack of local assembly. “Tesla’s entry will undoubtedly expand the premium EV space in India, but without deeper localisation or a wider service network, it will remain a niche player,” said an industry expert. “The absence of local manufacturing means Tesla cannot avail government incentives under the Make in India scheme, keeping its prices steep compared to rivals.”

For now, Tesla’s operations remain limited to Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram, where deliveries have commenced.

Analysts believe the coming months will be key to gauging Tesla’s long-term potential in India. While early interest suggests a strong brand pull, scaling volumes in a price-sensitive market will depend on localisation, after-sales infrastructure, and potential government engagement on policy incentives.
