India’s Consul General in Shanghai, Pratik Mathur, visited Tesla’s Gigafactory in the city on Thursday, fuelling speculation over the US automaker’s plans to export its China-made electric vehicles to India.

As per PTI, during the visit, Mathur toured the production line and experienced Tesla’s Cybertruck, the Indian Consulate in Shanghai said in a social media post. Tesla is expected to export its prime version Model Y to India, although the timeline for shipments has not yet been confirmed.

“Model Y introduces Tesla’s benchmark EV technology—500 to 622 km range, world-class battery and software systems—directly to Indian customers,” Mathur told PTI. He added that the vehicles will be sourced from the Shanghai Gigafactory, the world’s largest EV plant.

Tesla has also committed to deploying its Supercharger network in India, starting with Mumbai and Delhi, providing ultra-fast charging of 267 km in 15 minutes. The move is expected to accelerate charging infrastructure development, strengthen the local supply chain and intensify competition in the premium EV segment.

Tesla in India

Mathur said Tesla’s entry underscores India’s clean energy ambitions, EV adoption push and its 2070 net-zero target, adding that the country would join the list of 50 Tesla markets worldwide. Ahead of its entry, Tesla has begun hiring across retail, service and autopilot operations in Mumbai and Delhi as part of its India rollout strategy. The envoy noted that incentives such as a 15 per cent import duty for companies investing $500 million and localising operations within three years could pave the way for Tesla to consider manufacturing and assembly in India.
