Hyundai to launch first India-designed EV, expand Pune plant as part of 2030 roadmap

Hyundai Motor Company is betting big on India for its expansion plan as the South Korean major confirms its plan to introduce locally designed electric vehicle soon, marking a breakthrough in Hyundai’s product approach for the market.

The announcement was made as the company unveils its 2030 roadmap at the first CEO Investor Day held outside Korea.
The EV production will utliise localised supply chains to ensure affordability and accessibility.

Pune export hub

The carmaker said that its Pune plant will see capacity expand by 2.5 lakh units by 2030, reinforcing India’s role as an export hub. This comes as part of Hyundai’s broader plan to add 1.2 million additional units worldwide by the end of the decade. “India is no longer just a consumption market — it’s becoming a strategic hub for innovation, production and exports,” said José Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

Genesis brand

The company is also focusing on developing hybrids with next-gen TMED-II technology for improved efficiency.

The premium Genesis brand is also looking at India as an emerging luxury market, with hybrid, EV and extended-range EV models in the pipeline.
