Trump-brokered truce under threat as Thailand-Cambodia fighting reignites

hailand’s airstrikes on Monday targeted Cambodian military facilities housing long-range artillery, after surveillance signalled that rockets, including a Chinese-made variant, could be used to hit civilian areas, a Thai military official said. The neighbours engaged in their worst fighting since a five-day clash in July, with both sides accusing each other of breaching a ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Premier Anwar Ibrahim.Based on the movement of weapons and their range, Thailand’s military assessed that Cambodian forces could use Soviet-designed BM-21 and Chinese-made PHL-03 rockets to fire towards a provincial airport and a state-run district hospital, said defence ministry spokesman Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri.

A spokeswoman for Cambodia’s defence ministry did not immediately respond to detailed questions. Under the terms of the ceasefire, both sides in Nov began withdrawing heavy weapons, starting with rocket systems, followed by artillery and then tanks and other armoured vehicles. However, a week later, Thailand said it was halting implementation of ceasefire pact after alandmine blast maimed a Thai soldier. Reuters
