US President Donald Trump said he hopes Russian President Vladimir Putin will “be good” and move towards ending the war in Ukraine, while acknowledging that it is possible the Kremlin leader does not want a deal. Talking to Fox News, Donald Trump said, “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem, to be honest with you. I think Putin is tired of it. I think they’re all tired of it, but you never know.”

The remarks came a day after Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders at the White House to discuss peace efforts. The meeting followed his summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska last week.

Will There Be Direct Talks Between Putin And Zelenskyy?

Donald Trump said he had spoken to Vladimir Putin about arranging a one-on-one meeting between the Russian leader and Zelenskyy, to be followed by trilateral talks that would include himself. He said, “We’re going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks … It’s possible that he doesn’t want to make a deal.”

Donald Trump suggested that ties between Moscow and Kyiv might be improving, saying he would not have encouraged a direct meeting otherwise.

“I hope President Putin is going to be good, and if he’s not, it’s going to be a rough situation. And I hope that President Zelenskyy will do what he has to do. He has to show some flexibility also,” he said.

What Trump Said On Security Guarantees To Ukraine?

The US president also addressed questions about possible security guarantees for Ukraine, which Kyiv and its allies have said should form part of any eventual settlement. Donald Trump ruled out sending American troops but said the US could provide other forms of support. He said, “There’ll be some form of security. It can’t be NATO. They’re willing to put people on the ground. We’re willing to help them with things, especially, probably, by air.”

Asked what assurances he could give that US forces would not be deployed on Ukraine’s borders, Donald Trump replied, “You have my assurance. You know, I’m president.”
