HC scraps 1,600 supernumerary teachers’ posts in WB schools

Calcutta HC

KOLKATA: Calcutta HC on Thursday set aside a Bengal notification creating 1,600 supernumerary posts following a cabinet decision in May 2022 for absorption of candidates on waitlist in state-level selection test 2016 for recruitment of physical education & work education teachers in upper primary of state-run schools.HC junked the notification, questioning validity of the decision-making and held the notification violated recruitment rules (Rule 8) mandating names of candidates shall not be recommended against any vacancy that has not been notified. It held that since the posts were not notified within the prescribed period, they were “new” vacancies that had to be filled through a fresh recruitment process.
