Actor Umesh passes away at 80; Kannada cinema loses a beloved comic legend

Veteran Kannada actor Umesh, celebrated for his comedic talent and over 350 films, passed away at 80 after battling stage-four liver cancer. Known for his expressive humor and trademark dialogue delivery, Umesh’s career spanned five decades, beginning with ‘Makkala Rajya’ in 1960. His final days were marked by remarkable optimism, even while bedridden.

Kannada actor Umesh passed away on this day, November 30, at the age of 80 in a Bengaluru hospital.As reported by Asianet, the veteran actor, who had been fighting stage-four liver cancer, breathed his last surrounded by family. With a career that stretched across generations and over 350 films, Umesh leaves behind an unforgettable comedic legacy. Reportedly, the arrangements for his final viewing have been made at his residence in JP Nagar.

A journey of five decades in cinema

Umesh began his acting journey in 1960 with ‘Makkala Rajya’ which was released in the year 1960 and was directed by BR Panthulu. His trademark dialogue delivery, expressive humour and unmatched ability to light up screens made him one of Kannada cinema’s most adored performers.In 1975, he bagged the Karnataka State Award for Best Supporting Actor for ‘Katha Sangama’.

A sudden decline in health

In October this year, Umesh slipped and fell in the bathroom at his home and was immediately taken to the hospital. What initially appeared to be a leg and shoulder injury soon turned into heartbreaking news. Scans revealed that he was battling advanced liver cancer, leading to an immediate cancellation of the planned surgery. According to doctors, although he looked physically strong, the cancer had already spread to other organs by the time it was detected.Even during his final days, Umesh remained the man everyone loved. A video that went viral recently showed him joking and singing while bedridden, making even visitors emotional with his optimism. Actress Girija Lokesh, who saw him just three days ago, recalled how he continued to crack jokes despite the pain.Umesh’s last performance was in the movie ‘Kamal Sridevi’ which was released this year. He also played a pivotal role in ‘Kuladalli Keelayudo’.
