Siddaramaiah Meets Shivakumar Over Breakfast Amid Karnataka Power Tussle

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday hosted Deputy CM DK Shivakumar at his residence in Bengaluru for breakfast. Their meeting comes amid the ongoing power tussle in the state, which prompted intervention from the Congress high command.

Siddaramaiah had extended the invitation earlier, aiming to resolve the growing crisis. Legal advisor to the CM, AS Ponnanna, was also present during the discussions.

Following the meeting, Siddaramaiah took to X and said, “Had breakfast with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar this morning and had a brief conversation.”

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also tweeted: “Met CM Siddaramaiah avaru at Cauvery Residence this morning for a breakfast meeting. A productive discussion on Karnataka’s priorities and the road ahead.”

The Congress is expected to take up the issue with central leaders after its strategy group meeting ahead of the winter session of Parliament on November 30.

On Friday, Shivakumar reiterated that the Congress high command would decide the leadership issue. Responding to questions about supporters who want him elevated to the Chief Minister’s post, he said, “The party workers may be eager, but I am in no hurry. The party will take all the decisions.”

He did not rule out a visit to the national capital but clarified that his trip would be focused on raising key issues with the party leadership ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament.

Reiterating his position ahead of the meeting, Siddaramaiah had said there was no shift in his stance. “The high command has called both of us, so I have invited him (DK Shivakumar) for breakfast, and we will talk there. As I said earlier, I will accept whatever the high command says; there is no change in my stand. Even he (DK Shivakumar) said that whatever the high command says we’ll follow that…” he said.

The leadership tussle stems from the 2023 “power-sharing agreement” between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, which has pushed loyalists on both sides to lobby for their leaders’ claims to the state’s top post.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to intervene soon. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have publicly stated they will abide by whatever decision the high command makes.
