Water entered parts of Yamuna Bazar in Delhi on Tuesday after the Yamuna river rose above the danger mark, following days of heavy rainfall in capital.

According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the river breached the danger level on Monday afternoon, reaching 205.36 metres at the Old Railway Bridge at 2 pm and climbing further to 205.55 metres by 6 pm.

The warning level for the river in Delhi is 204.50 metres, while the danger mark is 205.33 metres. Evacuation of residents begins once the water level touches 206 metres.

Authorities have started shifting families living along the floodplains, anticipating a further rise in water level, according to reports.

CM Reviews Situation

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, accompanied by Minister Parvesh Verma, inspected low-lying areas on Monday.

She visited Asita Ghat, Yamuna Chhath Ghat, Regulator No. 12, and the Control Room before meeting officials at the district magistrate’s office in East Delhi.

“The Central Water Commission has issued an advisory that the river’s water level in Delhi may rise up to 206 metres due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment and discharge from the Hathnikund Barrage,” Gupta said after the review.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Cadet Corps (NCC) and volunteers have been put on alert.

The Faridabad administration has also stepped up preparedness as the river continues to swell.

Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh chaired a meeting on Monday and directed officials to remain on alert.

He said more than a dozen villages, including Mohana, Latipur and Manjhauli, could be affected if water levels rise further.

Delhi faced its worst flooding in decades in 2023, when the Yamuna touched an unprecedented 208.66 metres, breaking the previous record of 207.49 metres set in 1978. Large parts of the capital were inundated then, forcing the evacuation of more than 25,000 people.
