RGV: ‘I wanted to hit AR Rahman, he sat in the room and watched TV’

Ram Gopal Varma wanted hit AR Rahman as the composer stayed at a hotel in Goa and watched TV instead of making music for 'Rangeela': 'It’s worth it at the end of the day'

Ram Gopal Varma known for movies like ‘Shiva’, ‘Company’, ‘Satya’, ‘Sarkar’ and more, however, ‘Rangeela’ is considered his most iconic film. The Urmila Matondkar, Aamir Khan, Jackie Shroff starrer is a cult now, remembered for its story line, dialogues, cast and the music which is timeless. The soundtrack created by AR Rahman proved to be a blockbuster and is loved over the years. In a recent interview, RGV has opened up on how he was initially irritated by Rahman and the way he workd. So much so, that he just wanted to him him. Recalling how the song was made, RGV recalled in an interview with Pinkvilla, “We went to Goa for the composition of the ‘Hai Rama’ song. We were there for five days. First day he told me, ‘Ramu, I’m just thinking of something, I’ll make you listen tomorrow.’ Second day he said something else. Third day he said something… all five days he was not doing anything. And then he said, ‘I’ll do one thing, I’ll go to Chennai and I will send you from there.’”

He added further, “And then he told me, ‘Next time you get me to a hotel, make sure there is no TV. Because all this time I was watching TV.’ I wanted to hit him, you know. But then, when he finally came up with that ‘Hai Rama’ song, obviously, I guess for great things one needs to have the patience to wait. And it’s worth it at the end of the day, which is what he proved.”Earlier, during a chat with O2 India when ‘Rangeela’ completed 30 years, RGV had spoken about how it took a while for him to like ‘Haaye Rama’ from ‘Rangeela’ and understand Rahman’s vision behind it. He explained that he had envisioned “a very erotic number”, using “Kaate Nahi Katte” from Mr India as a tonal reference. After briefing Rahman on the mood and visual treatment, the composer returned with an unexpected melody. RGV recalled humming the tune and thinking: “I thought he had gone mad. I thought, by mistake, he had sent me something else, some classical Carnatic raga.”Unable to reconcile the song with his vision, he immediately reached out to Rahman. “I asked him, ‘I wanted something erotic, and you’ve sent me this?’ Rahman told me, ‘Sir, this is made for the same situation.’ I was like, how can we fit this situation with that tune?” At first, Varma wasn’t convinced at all. But over time, the composition began to work its magic. As he put it, “When I had the CD with me, I kept playing it every once in a while, and then suddenly, it got stuck in my head.” Go to Source
