Amid Donald Trump’s sliding stance towards Moscow after Alaska Summit, the European leaders have rushed to Washington DC, seeking NATO-like security guarantees for Ukraine.

Trump has seemingly gone soft on Russia since his August 15 meeting with Vladimir Putin, forgetting his own deadline set for the Russian President for a ceasefire in Ukraine and his warnings of consequences if no deal was made in the meeting.

In such a scenario, the European leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, UK PM Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian PM Giorgia Meloni, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, have landed in Washington DC to persuade Trump over security guarantees for Ukraine.

They have also visited all at once to show a united front against Russia and also to ensure that Zelenskyy was not humiliated by Trump like the last time on February 28.

How Did These Leaders React On Ukraine Talks?

UK PM Starmer reaffirmed that UK support for Ukraine is unwavering, insisting that international borders must not be changed by force and that Ukraine must receive credible security guarantees as part of any agreement.

French President Macron described Russia’s pressure on Ukraine not as a push for peace, but rather an attempt to force Ukraine’s surrender. He also said that Putin does not seek peace.

German Chancellor Merz urged Putin to agree to a ceasefire immediately, calling it a necessary step toward ending hostilities.

Italian PM Meloni voiced her optimism about proposed security guarantees for Ukraine.

NATO Secretary-General Rutte welcomed Germany’s $500 million security assistance package for Ukraine, commending it as a strong signal of continued commitment to Ukraine’s defence.

Stakes will be high as they summon at White House in a first-of-its-kind meeting with Trump, as they unitedly seek an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and security guarantees for Kyiv.
