Indian traveller faces racist trolling on social media while visiting Argentina, but locals have his back

Thiru’s post on X while visiting Argentina

A young Indian traveller named Thiru, visiting Argentina, was met with racist comments on social media platform X, but support from locals helped turn the situation around. The incident showed how social media can channel negativity while also allowing people to come together in positive ways. The visitor had recently arrived in Argentina to attend an event and posted a message on X expressing his excitement to meet people ahead of EFDevcon, a conference for developers, thinkers, and makers. “Argentina, I’m in you. Friends, let’s meet before EFDevcon,” he said. Some users responded with hateful and racist remarks. Argentinians came forward to welcome him and condemn the racist abuse.

Positive comments:

  • welcome man! enjoy the weekend
  • Sorry that you had to face the hateful and racist comments on your status.
  • No hate can slow you down. You’re doing great, and we’re all here for you.
  • Don’t let the awful people in the world ever tell u what can or can’t do
  • Welcome Thiru! We are happy to have you in our city and our country. Ignore the imbeciles making sh***y comments.
  • Welcome to south America. And… To all the people who made racist comments to you, may their wallets be drained!

“An Indian man reached Argentina for a conference and simply greeted people online, only to face racist trolling. Thankfully, real Argentinians stepped up. They didn’t let racism and hate ruin this person’s experience,” an X user named Meru said, appreciating the locals who offered support. Thiru’s post went viral with over 10 million interactions on X. The negative and racist comments are now barely visible due to the overwhelming positive responses that changed the algorithm.Thiru later posted a picture with Argentinian locals thanking them for their support: “After my recent posts, local builders have been coming up to me on the street and at events, offering support and telling me I’m welcome here. The online support has been tremendous too. I’m really grateful for all of this. A lot of opportunities have come from it – definitely a silver lining.”
