Juhi Chawla who is known being one of the most popular actresses of the 90s with movies like ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’, ‘Darr’, ‘Yess Boss’, ‘Ishq’ among many more has been married to Jay Mehta for over 30 years now. The actress was riding high on success at that point and she decided to keep her wedding low profile due to two reasons. As Juhi celebrates her birthday today, here’s recalling what the actress had said about her secret wedding. The actress stated that she was concerned for her career, and wanted to keep things quiet. Juhi had told Rajeev Masand, “I was just about established and just starting to do well. That’s the time Jay was serenading me, and I was afraid of losing my career just when I kind of got there. So, I wanted to carry on and this seemed the midway, that let’s keep it quiet and it’s okay, you carry on working.”

Juhi further mentioned that she was experiencing a tough period back then, having recently lost her mother. “That year my mother passed away as well so I had another tragedy and that was a very difficult time for me as well because I felt I was going to lose everything I had, everything I loved, my work an my mum.” Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta went on to tie the knot in 1995 and are blessed with two children, Jhanvi and Arjun. Juhi also said once on ‘Koffee With Karan’, “Before marriage, Jay used to write letters to me every day. After marriage, all of that stopped (laughs). Those days, we used to send letters and cards to each other which has now turned into emails and WhatsApp messages. Jay and I met at a dinner and then he started hovering around me. Once, on my birthday, he sent me a truck full of red roses. And, I took a year to say ‘yes’ to him.”Before Jay married Juhi, he was married to Sujata Birla, sister of industrialist Yash Birla, but she passed away in the Indian Airlines Flight 605 crash in 1990. Juhi supported him during this tough time and their friendship soon turned into love. Jay and Juhi married in 1995. As per reports, Mehta’s multinational conglomerate was valued at over $2.1 billion (approximately Rs 17,555 crore) as of 2024.
