Kolkata court seeks Centre response to contempt pleain Sunali case

.

KOLKATA: The Calcutta HC, while hearing a contempt plea on Tuesday against the Centre for failing to comply with its order to bring back six migrant workers deported to Bangladesh, including Sunali Khatun and her family, directed Union govt to submit a statement by Nov 28, report Srishti Lakhotia & Subrata Chattoraj. The counsel representing the deported workers’ families told a division bench comprising Justices Tapabrata Chakraborty and Reetobroto Kumar Mitra that the Centre had filed a special leave petition (SLP) in the Supreme Court challenging HC order. However, the SLP had defects in its filing, the counsel argued. Govt filed the SLP against HC ruling that quashed Delhi FRRO’s deportation order on Oct 22, two days before the deadline set by HC ended. The bench on Sept 26 had directed govt to bring back Sunali, her husband and child, as well as Sweety Bibi and her two sons from Bangladesh, where they are lodged in a jail.
