Kashmir imam held in alleged radicalisation drive targeting doctors

.

SRINAGAR: A Kashmiri cleric who doubled as a paramedic at Srinagar’s Govt Medical College has been arrested for allegedly driving a “white-collar” terrorist module that targeted medical students and young doctors — some of whom are suspects in the network busted in Faridabad hours before Monday’s car blast in New Delhi.Moulvi Irfan Ahmad Wagay, also known as Imam Irfan, from Shopian in south Kashmir allegedly used his access at GMC and his prayer sessions in Srinagar’s Nowgam to reach students, identify those seen as susceptible, and push them toward radicalisation, sources said Tuesday.Sources described him as a “key figure” who allegedly built and expanded a network that recruited medical professionals, raised funds, arranged logistics, and procured material for IEDs. Electronic devices were seized from his home during searches, according to police sources. The probe began after Jaish-e-Mohammed posters surfaced in Bunpora Nowgam on Oct 19, carrying threats against police and security forces. A case was registered under UAPA, Explosive Substances Act, and Arms Act at Nowgam police station. As investigators followed the trail, three alleged associates from Nowgam — Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar alias Shahid — were arrested. Police said roles of more suspects have emerged and will be pursued during ongoing inquiries.Financial flows linked to the module are under scrutiny, and police teams are questioning relatives and friends of the accused to map the wider network, officials said.
