Oman has secured a seat on the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, reflecting its growing influence in global environmental sustainability. The election underscores the Sultanate’s dedication to balancing development with ecological preservation, consistent with Oman Vision 2040 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Oman’s election to the MAB council

Oman was elected to serve on the International Coordinating Council of UNESCO’s MAB Programme for the term 2025–2029. The election took place during the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan. The Sultanate was represented by its Environment Authority, demonstrating its active participation in global environmental governance. This achievement highlights Oman’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and its growing recognition as a strategic partner in international efforts to protect ecosystems while pursuing national development.

The MAB programme and Oman’s role

The UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Programme is designed to foster scientific and research collaboration among member states. Its key objectives include:

  • Expanding and managing protected areas.
  • Conserving biodiversity across diverse ecosystems.
  • Supporting scientific research and innovation aimed at addressing climate change challenges.
  • Empowering youth and researchers through research grants.
  • Promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices worldwide.

Oman’s participation in the Council positions the country to actively contribute to these goals, enabling it to influence international strategies for sustainable environmental management.

Oman’s track record in biodiversity and environmental protection

The Sultanate has already established a strong presence within the MAB Programme by successfully including two nature reserves in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves:

  1. Al-Sareen Nature Reserve
  2. Al Jabal Al Akhdar Landscape Reserve

These designations reflect Oman’s proactive efforts to protect biodiversity, conserve natural landscapes, and promote sustainable development in line with its national vision and international standards.

Broader implications and strategic significance

Oman’s election to the MAB Council represents more than recognition—it reinforces the Sultanate’s role as a global environmental partner. By participating in international environmental platforms, Oman strengthens its ability to:

  • Advocate for policies that balance human development with ecological protection.
  • Share knowledge and best practices on biodiversity conservation.
  • Support innovation in sustainable solutions to address climate change.

This achievement complements Oman’s ongoing initiatives, including local environmental projects and active participation in global climate discussions, such as the UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil.
