Deepika on facing ‘Casting Biases’ internationally

Deepika Padukone on facing ‘Casting Biases’ internationally: ‘It’s very deliberate; I was very clear talking about India to the world’

Deepika Padukone, one of India’s most admired global icons, continues to shine both on and off screen. From her powerful performances in ‘Pathaan,’ ‘Chhapaak,’ and ‘Padmaavat’ to her international collaborations like ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage.’ From being on the jury of the 75th Cannes Film Festival in 2022 to unveiling the FIFA World Cup Final trophy in Qatar, 2022. Also becoming the brand ambassador of many international brands. In the recent interview, she reflects on Indian actors facingcasting biases and on skin tone.

On facing ‘Casting Biases’

During the conversation with CNBC-TV18, Deepika opened up about the ongoing struggles surrounding casting biases in the film industry. She acknowledged how fair skin has long been favored in mainstream narratives; she said, “It’s very deliberate… I was very clear talking about India to the world, but the India that I know. For example, moving to Hollywood and getting into that industry, or doing it in a way that has been expected of us or suits a global audience, was something I never wanted to do, even if it took longer.”

She also added, “I think what bothered me every time I went to the West was this sort of idea of India they have. It is so different from the country that I know. I have experienced all those clichés firsthand, whether it has to do with casting, our accent, or the color of my skin. I was clear that I wanted to do it my way and on my terms.”

Lessons from motherhood

Further in the interview, she also opened up about how motherhood has changed her personality in the most unexpected yet fulfilling ways; she admitted that she has become more tolerant and open to new experiences since becoming a mother. She said, “It pushes you out of your comfort zone and makes you a social person; I’ve never been a social person. Having to interact with other parents and now playschool. Motherhood just pushes you out of your comfort zone in a good way. I’ve always wanted to be a mother, and now, I’m playing my best role.”On the occasion of Diwali, Deepika and Ranveer revealed the face of their daughter, Dua.
