When Zayed Khan had a Hindu marriage before ‘nikaah’

Before Zarine Khan's last rites as per Hindu customs, Zayed Khan also had a Hindu marriage with Malaika Parekh with seven 'pheras' and then a 'nikaah'

anjay Khan’s wife and Zayed Khan, Sussanne Khan’s mother Zarine Khan passed away in Mumbai at the age of 81 due to cardiac arrest. Sussane and Zayed have two more siblings, Farah Ali Khan and Simone Khan. Zarine’s funeral and cremation happened as per Hindu customs as before she married Sanjay, she was born as a Hindu. Her last wish was to be cremated in a Hindu way. She did not convert to Islam after marrying Sanjay Khan, and her household remained interfaith. This was the reaason her last rites were performed as per Hindu traditions rather than her husband’s Muslim faith. But before Zarine’s funeral, years ago, Zayed opted for a Hindu wedding ceremony wedding ceremony instead of a Hindu ritual because it was Malaika’s wish and his family respects all religious and traditions. The couple desired an intimate celebration, separate from the grand official festivities. Before their lavish wedding, Malaika and Zayed exchanged vows in a private Hindu ceremony at Taj Village, Goa, attended only by a few close friends, family members, and a pandit. The low-key event came as a complete surprise to those present.Wanting a meaningful and personal union, the duo chose a Hindu wedding, feeling that the intimacy of the moment might get lost amid the scale of their official Nikah ceremony, which had a massive 2,000-guest list. Zayed even admitted that the larger event could have easily felt like a “circus.” Interestingly, they kept their Hindu wedding under wraps until later, when they opened up about it during an interview on the Couple of Things YouTube channel. Describing it as a “beautiful destination wedding,” Zayed recalled, “Very sweetly, she had organised a pandit and pheras. And in Goa, at Taj Village, we actually got married before we got married. We did our seven pheras, and it was such a beautiful destination wedding. We really wanted to remember our wedding day and have fun.”Their love story dates back to their teenage years at Kodaikanal International School, where Zayed first noticed Malaika. It reportedly took him nearly two months to muster the courage to make eye contact with her. Over time, friendship turned into love, and even distance couldn’t shake their bond when Zayed moved abroad to study filmmaking and business management in the US and London. Malaika waited for him to establish himself before marriage.Zayed proposed to her not once but four times, each with a different ring, until she finally said yes. The couple later sealed their union in a grand Nikah ceremony on July 3, 2005, during which Malaika reportedly converted to Islam. Today, they are proud parents to two sons, Zidaan (born in 2008) and Aariz (born in 2011).
