Diaper diplomacy: Newsom’s 'baby Trump' meme goes viral after Democrats sweep key states

California Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated early Wednesday after Democrats secured major victories nationwide. The party swept key races, dominating Virginia, holding New Jersey, winning statewide contests in Georgia, taking dozens of legislative and local offices, and seeing historic wins in New York with progressive candidates claiming major city offices. In California, voters approved Newsom’s redistricting plan, a direct response to Texas’ recent changes, giving Democrats the power to redraw congressional maps from 2026 to 2030. Newsom took to X to respond to the White House’s pre-election slogan, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” with a 3-word response: “We just did.”

A new Democratic playbook

Newsom shared AI-generated images depicting baby Donald Trump crying with the California governor parenting the toddler. The governor warned Democrats not to become complacent, citing Trump’s efforts to deploy the military in cities, curb free speech, and “rig the midterm elections before one single vote is even cast.” The victory in California and the Democratic sweep signal a generational shift within the party. If Democrats secure a House majority in the 2026 midterms, they will strengthen oversight over Trump’s administration and potentially pursue investigations and subpoenas, according to Semafor. Newsom addressed supporters, saying, “What a night for the Democratic Party. We are proud here in California to be part of this narrative this evening.”

Outspoken first partner

Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, also took the fight to Trump. Speaking at a press conference supporting Prop. 50, she said, “I will not raise my children to think Donald Trump is an acceptable American leader. Nor that he is what the leader of our great country should behave like. I won’t raise them to think his terror enables his power and that his greed equals success. He is the exact opposite of what real strength looks like.”She praised honesty as a core value and took a jibe at Trump for enriching his family and cronies while stripping away citizens’ rights. She added, “He’s a con artist, a predator, a malignant narcissist-in-chief, and the worst president in our nation’s history.” Go to Source
