Elon Musk backs Andrew Cuomo in NYC race; says voting for Sliwa would only help Mamdani

Elon Musk has thrown his support behind Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s heated mayoral race and advised New Yorkers to not go for the ‘socialist’ Zohran Mamdani. In a post on X, the Tesla and SpaceX chief urged New Yorkers to “remember to vote tomorrow,” warning that “a vote for Curtis [Sliwa] is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is.” He ended his post with a blunt message: “VOTE CUOMO!” The endorsement aligns Musk with several billionaire figures who have rallied against Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, including Mike Bloomberg, Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia, and hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. US President Donald Trump also said he preferred Cuomo, calling him the “lesser evil” compared to Mamdani in a CBS 60 Minutes interview. The MAGA chief said he would rather have Cuomo — whom he called a “bad Democrat” — as New York City’s mayor than a “communist,” referring to Mamdani.

About the candidates

Zohran Mamdani is a progressive state assemblyman from Queens who has built his campaign on taxing the ultra-rich and expanding affordable housing. He wants stronger unions, public housing for all, and climate policies that put working people first. Mamdani has support from left-wing groups like the Democratic Socialists of America but is strongly opposed by Wall Street, landlords, and tech billionaires who see his policies as hostile to business. Andrew Cuomo, the former governor, is pitching himself as a steady, experienced hand who can bring order back to New York City. His campaign focuses on fiscal discipline, safety, police force, and rebuilding trust with businesses. He says New York needs balance, not extremes. Backed by moderates and several major donors, Cuomo is trying to appeal to voters tired of political fights and economic uncertainty.Curtis Sliwa, the Republican and founder of the Guardian Angels, is running on a law-and-order message. Known for his red beret and street patrols, Sliwa promises to clean up the subways, fight crime, and deal with homelessness. His focus is public safety above all. Supporters see him as tough and honest, while critics say his plans are short on details and rely too much on fear of rising crime.
