Mumbai hostage case similar to ‘A Thursday’ film

Mumbai hostage case: Netizens point eerie similarity to Yami Gautam's 'A Thursday'; ask 'how are people copying films in real life'

Yami Gautam’s 2022 thriller ‘A Thursday’ is back in the headlines, this time over a shocking hostage situation that unfolded in Mumbai’s Powai area, ironically on a Thursday, October 30.

About the Rohit Arya case

According to news reports, a man, identified as Rohit Arya, a YouTuber and former schoolteacher from Nagpur, took 17 children and two adults hostage inside R A Studio in Powai before being shot dead in a rescue operation by the Mumbai police. The children, boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 12, had reportedly been called to the studio for an audition for a web series. While the Police were able to rescue the children after a three-hour hostage drama, Arya reportedly succumbed to a bullet injury.

Netizens link hostage case to Bollywood film

As details of the case emerged online, netizens quickly drew comparisons to the Bollywood film ‘A Thursday’, in which Yami Gautam also playing a teacher, takes 16 children and two adults hostage on a Thursday. Taking the hostages, she then uses the situation to demand justice from the government for her past trauma. Taking to their handles, netizens tweeted, “A man has taken 17 children hostage inside a studio, threatening to harm them if his demands aren’t met. Police say he appears mentally unstable. Feels eerily similar to Yami Gautam’s movie ‘A Thursday’ (2022), only this time, it’s horrifyingly real.””Bro this hostage drama is exactly like yami gautam’s film ‘A Thursday’,” another tweeted. Another said, “There is the amazing movie called, Madari starring Irrfan Khan and another movie A Thursday, starring Yami Gautam. This whole plot matches these 2 movies.”Another asked, “This is like the same plot of A Thursday yami gautams movie on jiostar …….how people r copying films in real life……..””Lagta hain isne yami gautam ki movie a thursday dekhi hain,” said another.

Reel vs Real

Like Yami’s protagonist in the film, Arya reportedly suffered from mental health issues. According to reports, he was said to be frustrated with the government, particularly the education department, over unpaid dues and alleged mistreatment.Police sources revealed, “His grievances appear to have pushed him into a breakdown that culminated in this act.”The case is still under investigation.
