Sweta on PC’s Hollywood journey: She is only helping herself

Sweta Keswani lauds Priyanka Chopra’s Hollywood journey but credits Mindy Kaling for lifting other South Asians, 'Priyanka is only helping herself'

Actor Sweta Keswani, known for her role in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, recently shared candid thoughts about Priyanka Chopra’s global journey and her impact on South Asian representation in Hollywood. Speaking to India Today, the US-based actor said that while Priyanka’s success is undeniable, her journey hasn’t necessarily lifted the larger South Asian community. Keswani drew a comparison between Priyanka and Mindy Kaling, calling the latter a true changemaker who actively helps others in the industry.“I think it’s incredible what she’s accomplished—there’s no two ways about that. But she’s not Mindy Kaling. She’s not helping other South Asians. She’s only helping herself, to be very honest,” Sweta said, adding that Kaling’s efforts as a writer and producer have opened doors for many women of colour in Hollywood.

‘There are cliques just like everywhere’

The actor, who moved to the United States in 2010, also opened up about the social circles and cliques within the South Asian entertainment diaspora. “There are cliques just like everywhere. Unfortunately, I’m not part of any South Asian clique,” she admitted, noting that motherhood and physical distance kept her away from the scene for several years. However, with her daughter now older, Sweta says she’s more able to engage with the industry again.

About ‘Tabassum’

Sweta Keswani is now channelling her experience into producing meaningful stories. Her upcoming project Tabassum, written by a South Asian writer, tells the story of a 40-year-old woman navigating life and identity. “It’s a narrative that deeply resonated with me, and I wanted to elevate it,” she said.Coming to Priyanka Chopra’s work front, she will be next seen in Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli’s untitled project.
