Russia tested another nuclear-powered weapon, this time an underwater drone ‘Poseidon,’ President Vladimir Putin informed on Wednesday. This came after US President Donald Trump openly criticised the test of Burevestnik missile, asking the Russian counterpart to focus on resolving Ukraine war.”Yesterday, another test was conducted for another prospective system — the unmanned underwater device ‘Poseidon,’ also equipped with a nuclear power unit,” Putin said, adding there was “no way to intercept” the drone.

He further claimed that the missile had the capabilities to “significantly surpass” the ‘Sarmat’ missile. This is second such test in the past seven days as Putin on Sunday touted the successful final test of the “unlimited-range” Burevestnik missile. This was a part of an October 21 nuclear drill, seen as a signal that Moscow would not bow to Western pressure over Ukraine. The announcement coincided with Trump sharpening his stance on Russia as he sought movement toward a ceasefire.“He ought to get the war (in Ukraine) ended. A war that should have taken one week is now soon in its fourth year. That’s what he ought to do instead of testing missiles,” Trump had said, reacting to the test.

What is Poseidon?

Poseidon as a cutting-edge autonomous, nuclear-powered underwater vehicle capable of reaching unprecedented depths and speeds. According to Putin, its destructive power “significantly exceeds” that of Russia’s Sarmat intercontinental missile, underscoring its role as a next-generation strategic deterrent designed to evade traditional defense systems. He further emphasized that Poseidon is effectively impossible to intercept, claiming that no current technology can counter it.
