Former Cricketer Azharuddin Set To Become Telangana Minister, Cabinet Induction On Friday

Former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader, Mohammed Azharuddin, is scheduled to be sworn in as a Minister in the Telangana Cabinet on Friday, October 31. The induction comes as a notable surprise, strategically timed in the midst of the fervent campaigning for the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency by-election, slated for November 11.

This constituency is marked by a substantial concentration of Muslim minority voters, whose support is viewed as crucial to the prospects of any party. Azharuddin’s elevation to the Cabinet is widely interpreted as a conscious decision by the ruling Congress to enhance its standing within the minority communities, The Hindu reported.

Azharuddin’s Legislative Council Nomination

Azharuddin’s path to the Cabinet began earlier this year. In August, following a Supreme Court decision that invalidated the previous nominations of Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan, he was named as a member of the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy submitted a revised list of nominees, including both Kodandaram and Azharuddin, who had his nomination approved.

The decision to induct the former cricketer is also perceived as an effort to assuage the feelings of minority communities, who had expressed disappointment over the absence of a Cabinet position. Crucially, the Congress party currently has no Muslim Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) represented in the Cabinet.

Jubilee Hills Bypoll: A Prestige Battle

The upcoming by-election for the Jubilee Hills seat has turned into a major prestige contest for the governing Congress party, which is expending all efforts to secure a victory. The high density of Muslim minority votes in the constituency means the community’s backing will directly impact the election outcome. The selection of Azharuddin for a ministerial post is a direct attempt to utilise his profile to galvanise this essential voting bloc.

Azharuddin has a recent electoral history in the area, having contested the Jubilee Hills seat for the Congress in the 2023 Assembly elections, where he was defeated by the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) candidate, Maganti Gopinath. The by-poll became necessary after the passing of the BRS MLA in June of this year.

Revanth Reddy-Led Telangana Cabinet

With Azharuddin’s imminent inclusion, the total strength of the Revanth Reddy-led Cabinet will rise to 16. The Council of Ministers in Telangana has a maximum possible strength of 18, including the Chief Minister.

Chief Minister Reddy assumed office on December 7, 2023, after the Congress secured an electoral victory over the BRS. The initial Cabinet was announced on the same day. A previous expansion occurred in June this year with the induction of three other Ministers: G. Vivek Venkatswamy and Adluri Laxman Kumar, both Scheduled Caste legislators, and Vakati Sridhar, a Backward Caste MLA.

The former India Captain initiated his political career in 2009 by contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Moradabad on a Congress ticket. He later shifted his parliamentary constituency to Tonk Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan for the 2014 elections, where he lost to the BJP nominee. In 2018, he was appointed the working president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee before attempting his luck in the Jubilee Hills constituency in 2023.
