Satyajit Ray’s iconic ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ restored in 4K, returns to Indian theatres this November

Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Aranyer Din Ratri,’ restored in 4K, will screen in Indian theatres from November 7. Premiered at Cannes and featured at international festivals, it follows urban men’s wilderness trip. The film’s sequel, Abar Aranye, continues their story. Surviving cast and filmmakers attended Cannes and Toronto premieres.

The 4K restored edition of Satyajit Ray’s classic ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’, which had its world premiere at the 78th Cannes Film Festival this May, is scheduled to be released in Indian cinemas starting November 7. Theatre-owner Arijit Dutta confirmed on Monday that the film will be showcased in selected theatres and multiplexes nationwide.National release announcementDutta wrote on Facebook, “A must see again… From 7.11.25 onwards ….. and yes its a national release at select theatres and plex’s”.Plot and cast detailsThe film, based on the novel by Bengali writer Sunil Gangopadhyay, centers on a group of city men from Calcutta—Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, and Rabi Ghosh—who embark on a weekend trip into the wilderness. The ensemble cast also features Sharmila Tagore, Kaberi Bose, and Simi Garewal.International screenings and accoladesIn June, ‘Aranyer Din Ratri’ was featured at Italy’s Il Cinema Ritrovato festival. The film earned a nomination for Best Film at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival in 1970. Its story was later continued in the 2003 sequel Abar Aranye, directed by Goutam Ghose, which follows the four friends and their families as they revisit the wilderness.Cannes screening and key attendeesAt the Cannes screening of the restored masterpiece, the only surviving cast members, Tagore and Garewal, were present. The event was also attended by filmmaker Wes Anderson and Purnima Dutta, who leads Piyali Films and produced Aranyer Din Ratri. In September, the film had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
