When Alia convinced Abhishek Chaubey to cast her in Udta Punjab

Alia Bhatt on how she convinced Abhishek Chaubey to cast her in Udta Punjab

Alia Bhatt revealed how she had to convince director Abhishek Chaubey for her role in ‘Udta Punjab’. Initially, Chaubey envisioned her as a typical heroine, but Alia, after reading the script, was determined to play the part. She underwent look tests and assured the filmmaker of her dedication to prove her versatility as an actor.

Today Alia Bhatt has cemented her position as one of the strongest actors in the country thanks to her performance in films like Raazi, Gangubai Kathiawadi, Kapoor & Sons, Highway and many more. But there was a point in time when she had to convince a director to cast her in her film when he was in two minds about her and that film was Udta Punjab by Abhishek Chaubey.

As per a report in News 18, it was Shahid Kapoor who first introduced her to the film. “Shahid and I were shooting for ‘Shaandaar’ at the time. He told me about the script and that it is such a good script and he wants me to read it. Maybe he wanted my advice on it or maybe he was going to suggest me for this part, I don’t know. Shahid and I had become very good friends and he had asked me to just read the script. I read the script and I was like ‘Wow, what a part’. I was like, ‘listen I want to do this part’. He was like, ‘Okay, I also think it will be quite cool and you should meet Chaubey’. So then I met Chaubey and I had to convince him that I will do it.”

“Abhishek Chaubey was like I am still realigning because he had a certain image of me in his mind where she is this young girl, heroine because I had done those kinds of films, although I had done a film like ‘Highway’. For Chaubey to reimagine me as that character was a big thing. He had to sleep on it,” Alia recalled.
Determined to land the part, Alia went through multiple look tests and assured the filmmaker of her commitment. “So we did a look test or something like that and he was still not sure. I said I will work very hard and I will really prove myself but I really want to play this part. I wanted to prove that I can be really the opposite also. Like I really wanted to prove myself and the world that I am a chameleon. I can get into any shape and size. I just wanted to prove it somehow,” she said.
