'Real-world superhero': When Bill Gates praised Amitabh Bachchan for helping make India polio-free

Bill Gates took India by surprise when he announced his special appearance in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2’. A teaser showing him interacting with Smriti Irani’s iconic character Tulsi had social media buzzing instantly. But long before this TV moment, did you know Gates had already called Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan a real-life hero for his work.

Amitabh Bachchan’s role in helping India fight against polio

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan is known as the top-gun of Indian cinema, a man whose presence can light up both the big and small screen. Over decades, he has entertained millions, endorsed brands, and delivered hit after hit. In 2002, Big B became the UNICEF goodwill ambassador for the polio eradication campaign in India.

Through advertisements and public appearances, he urged parents to vaccinate their children. His involvement became symbolic of the nationwide effort that ultimately led to India being declared polio-free in 2014.

Bill Gates publicly praised Amitabh Bachchan

The ‘Sholay’ actor’s contribution did not go unnoticed globally. In 2018, Bill Gates shared an opinion piece written by Bachchan highlighting India’s journey to becoming polio-free. He called the actor a real-life hero, writing on X, “Real-world superheroes rarely make the headlines. But what if that wasn’t the case? A stirring piece by Bollywood actor @SrBachchan.”

Amitabh Bachchan gave credit to the workers

True to his character, the ‘Piku’ actor did not take all the credit. He quickly reminded everyone that he was only the face of the campaign. The real heroes were the countless workers on the ground who made polio eradication possible. He tweeted, “Thank you Mr Gates for this acknowledgement.. the worker is the one who deserves the highest award for the eradication of making India Polio free .. we may have the face and means, but the workers do the ‘WORK’… I salute them!”

Amitabh Bachchan on the work front

Amitabh Bachchan will soon be seen in Ribhu Dasgupta’s ‘Section 84’, alongside Diana Penty, Nimrat Kaur, and Abhishek Banerjee. He will also feature in the sequel to Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’. Go to Source
