New York City pays tribute to Sikh community, renames street after Guru Tegh Bahadur; honours legacy of compassion and justice

New York City has paid a historical tribute to the Sikh community by naming a street after Guru Tegh Bahadur, the 9th Sikh guru, to honour his legacy. NYC Council Member Lynn Schulman unveiled the street on October 14. The stretch of 114th St & 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, which is also home to Gurudwara Makhan Shah Lubana, has been renamed Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way.Celebrating the “proud moment”, Union minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri shared a post on X highlighting the significance of Sikh community in the Richmond Hills. “In a proud moment for the Sikh Sangat, a street in New York is now named after the epitome of religious freedom & protector of human rights, the 9th Sikh Guru Sahib, Hind Di Chadar, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji,” wrote Puri. He further went on to say, “This befitting honour highlights the significance of the Sikh community in Richmond Hill and recognises the contribution of Sikh heritage to the cultural fabric of New York City where I have lived during my posting as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013.”

Moving the resolution, NYC council member Lynn Schulman shared photos from the unveiling ceremony on X. She wrote, “In a HISTORIC first, a NYC Street is named after Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg. 114th St & 101st Ave. in Richmond Hill, home to Gurdwara Makhan Shah Lubana, will now be known as Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way, to honor the 9th #Sikh Guru’s legacy of sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering stand for justice.”Sikhs worldwide have rejoiced at the decision. A user, while sharing the announcement on Instagram, said, “This is not just a street name, it is a statement, a symbol of freedom, justice, and the Guru’s eternal spirit that now lives in New York City.”
