Sharad Kelkar on his Diwali addiction to mom’s Dahi Vada

Sharad Kelkar on his Diwali addiction to mom’s Dahi Vada; 'After every half an hour, I'll pick up a plate' - Exclusive

They say even a Michelin-starred chef can’t compete with the flavors and taste that a mother brings to food. A perfect example of it came in front of us, when Sharad Keklkar narrated the sweet tale about his addiction to his mom’s home-made samosas and dahi vadas on Diwali.“My mother, she’s around 70 plus, and still she has that excitement and enthusiasm to (3:05) make sweets and other stuff. So, she knows that my son likes that. So, a lot of sweets she makes despite her age,” said the actor in an exclusive interview with us, before adding, “On Diwali, obviously, all my friends come to my house. We eat Samosas and dahi vadas and other things.”

It’s a Diwali binge

The actor mentioned that, though he makes sure to cut down the festival weight post the celebration, during the festive time, he doesn’t hold himself back. “I eat everything. You have to sacrifice a bit after Diwali. You have to join the gym. I’ll diet for some days. I’ll really fix on myself. But of course, Diwal, there’s no compromise on eating. I love samosas and dahi vadas. That’s what my mom makes,” he told us.Confessing his love for his mom’s homemade snacks, he continued, “I keep on eating. After every half an hour, I’ll pick up a plate and I’ll put some dahi vadas, two, three, and then I eat. And again, I’ll sit and I’ll chit chat with my friends. Again, I’ll get up and I’ll have samosas or something. So, I keep on eating. I have the liberty to eat sweets.”“So, I eat a lot of kaju katlis and rasmalais, which are only allowed for a day. If my stomach gets upset, that is a different case,” he chuckled.

The traditional Diwali at the Kelkar house

The ‘Tanhaji’ actor gave us a sneak peek into how Diwali is celebrated at his house. He revealed that he is a pure traditionalist at heart when it comes to Diwali, and enjoys every phase and part of it. “The first thing is the cleaning of the house, which is very exciting. You find so many things that you think you have lost. So, that’s the excitement. And the memories that they bring,” he quoted. Then, in a heartfelt moment, he added, “Since childhood, obviously, my dad used to do puja when he passed away, then I started doing puja when I was 17, 18. So, since then, I’m doing the Lakshmi Puja on Diwali day. But before that, there are a lot of festivals we have. We have the morning snaan on. You have to get up before sunrise and then take a bath. That’s a tradition.”“Then, obviously, now, because we are in such a society, we are all friends. So, it’s a great occasion to meet friends, attend a lot of Diwali parties, and, you know, host sometimes. I have been hosting every year and going to others’ parties also,” concluded the actor.
