Canada announces investigation into paper plates; Social media users troll govt; 'Feeling very much safe'

Canada announces crackdown on paper plates, social media users troll, saying they already feel safe.

The Canada Border Service Agency announced an investigation into paper plates to find out if China is sending certain types of disposable paper plates, bowls, harming Canadian industries. The announcement became a laughing stock on social media as people mockingly responded that they were feeling much safer now as the Mark Carney government paid attention to paper plates instead of fentanyl, illegal guns. “The CBSA’s investigations follow a complaint filed by CKF Inc. The complainant alleges that as a result of an increase in the volume of the dumped imports, they have suffered material injury in the form of price undercutting, price depression, lost sales, lost market share, reduced net income and profitability, reduction in capacity utilization, and reduced employment,” the agency said in its announcement. “The CBSA and the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) both play a role in the investigations. The CITT will begin a preliminary inquiry to determine whether the imports are harming Canadian producers and will issue a decision by December 15, 2025. Concurrently, the CBSA will investigate whether the imports are being sold in Canada at unfair prices and/or are being subsidized, and will make a preliminary decision by January 13, 2026,” it said.

‘Is this a joke?’

The post drew hilarious reactions after Conservative leader Shuv Majumdar drew attention to the bizarre investigation. “Paper plates? Not fentanyl. Not secure borders. Not stopping illegal guns from coming into our country. Paper plates. That is the most important border issue of the day for the Liberals,” he posted. “Phew thank God you guys have your eyes on the important stuff…” one wrote. “Yeah, that’s a lot more important than drugs and people coming into the country illegally,” another wrote. “As far as I’m aware, paper plates are pretty much the only issue Canada is facing these days. So once we deal with those everything should be good,” a third user mocked.
