‘No foul play in Zubeen’s death’: Singapore police issues statement

'No foul play in Zubeen Garg's death': Singapore police issues statement days after the Assamese singer's demise

Singer Zubeen Garg known for singing tracks like ‘Ya Ali’ and ‘Jaane Kya Chaahe Mann’ passed away on September 19. His sudden demise left his fans in a state of shock as they mourned his loss. An accident during scuba diving led to his death. While investigation was ongoing, in a significant update the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has released an official statement confirming that, based on preliminary investigations that no foul play has been detected. The statement also addressed the wave of “speculations” and “false information” circulating online, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims about the case.“The case is currently being investigated by the SPF, in accordance with Singapore’s Coroners Act 2010. Based on preliminary investigations, the SPF does not suspect foul play. Upon completion of the SPF’s investigations, which may take up to another three months or so, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will then determine whether to hold a Coroner’s Inquiry (“CI”). A CI is a fact-finding process led by a Coroner, who is a Judicial Officer of the Courts, to establish the cause and circumstances of death. Its findings will be made public upon conclusion,” the statement read.

The SPF further noted, “Despite the fact that SPF is still in the midst of its investigations, on 1 October 2025, it extended a copy of the autopsy report of the late Mr Garg, and SPF’s preliminary findings, to the High Commission of India upon their request.”Emphasizing their commitment to due process, the Singapore Police added, “The SPF is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case, and this takes time. We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information.” Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19 after being rescued from the sea by Singapore authorities. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors provided intensive care. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries. The popular Assamese singer had travelled to Singapore to perform at the North East Festival on the day of the incident.Meanwhile, the Assam CID’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding his death. Several individuals have been questioned, and five key accused — event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and suspended APS officer Sandipan Garg, along with two PSOs, Nandeswar and Bora — have been remanded to judicial custody and lodged in Baksa Jail.
