Watch: Small plane crashes onto Massachusetts highway, catches fire

A small plane crashed onto Massachusetts highway Monday morning.

A fixed-wing plane crashed and fell on the I-195 in Dartmouth as it was trying to land at New Bedford Regional Airport. Shocking visuals of the plane on fire surfaced on social media though there is no report on fatalities. The crash forced a closure of part of the highway. Massachusetts State Police learned of the crash around 8:15 a.m. Monday, Tim McGuirk, an agency spokesman, said in a statement. The plane may have been attempting to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, but State Police say the pilot did not provide the airport with a flight plan or the number of people on board. The identity of the pilot or passengers, as well as the severity of their injuries, was not immediately available Monday morning. The highway is closed going west at exit 19, and in both directions at exit 22, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The left lane heading east is also closed at exit 19, the agency said. The plane crashed as a powerful nor’easter was tearing across portions of the Northeast and New England, bringing heavy rain and strong wind gusts to the region. However, it’s unknown if the nor’easter played a role in the crash at this point.
