Bengal 'gang rape' horror: BJP leaders stopped from meeting victim; spar with cops - watch

NEW DELHI: Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in West Bengal were stopped by the cops on Sunday from meeting the med student who was allegedly gangraped in Durgapur. The leaders confronted the police, demanding to know why they were being prevented from meeting the survivor after finding the gates of the hospital closed. BJP leader Locket Chatterjee, who was also among the visitors, raised suspicion over the probe being carried out by the state government and said, “If any new incident occurs, the criminal will be let off again. Then the public will forget too. You saw how millions of people took to the streets over the rape-murder case at RG Kar College and Hospital, but nothing happened. After that, it was handed over to the CBI. Without evidence, what can the CBI do… so the same will happen here too…. and the criminal will be let off.” Meanwhile, all three accused in the gang rape case have been remanded ten days’ police custody. Moreover, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul strongly condemned Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s “girls shouldn’t go out at night” remark, comparing her administration to the Taliban government in Afghanistan.”We have a Taliban government in Afghanistan and we have Mamata Banerjee’s government in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee today is saying that this girl, the victim of the Durgapur incident, had gone out at 12 o’clock at night. Mamata Banerjee, please don’t lie. The CCTV footage shows that she went out to fetch her food at 7.58 pm or 8 pm… So please do not try to put the blame on the girl and the institution. What do you think?” she said. “After 12 am, women shouldn’t go out? Doctors who are doing night duty in hospitals shouldn’t go out? Nurses who give us service shouldn’t go out? The IT sector shouldn’t go out and do its duty. People in the service industry shouldn’t go out. This kind of Taliban mentality is shameful. Actually, you have always been protecting the rapists and cursing the victims. Because these rapists are TMC cadres, and in the coming 2026 elections, you will use them for vote-rigging and booth-capturing, to create terror among the people of Bengal,” she added. Earlier in the day, Mamata stirred a controversy after she said that girls should “protect themselves” and “should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night.””The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also. There is a forest area,” she said. “This is a private college. Three weeks ago, three girls were raped on the beach in Odisha. What action is being taken by the Odisha government?… The girl was studying in a private medical college. How did she come out at 12.30am? As far as I know, the incident took place in the forest area. I do not know what happened. The investigation is on. I’m shocked to see the incident, but private medical colleges also should take care of their students, and especially girls,” she added. The second-year student from a private medical college in Durgapur, who was allegedly gangraped, hails from Jaleswar in Odisha. Go to Source
