Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump shared a lighthearted exchange during their meeting at the White House on Tuesday.“I wore red for you,” Carney said to Trump, gesturing toward the tie he was wearing. In the video, Trump is also seen sidestepping a question regarding the anniversary of Hamas’s attack on Israel. Trump and Carney met on Tuesday in the Oval Office to discuss a range of issues, including defence cooperation, the Israel-Gaza conflict, and the ongoing US government shutdown.Speaking to reporters, Carney thanked Trump for hosting him “for a second time this year,” describing the president as “a transformative president.” He also praised Trump’s record in global affairs, highlighting his success in securing “unprecedented commitments from Nato partners to defence spending” and “disabling Iran as a force of terror.”The meeting takes place months after Trump implemented a 35 percent tariff on Canadian imports, effective from August 1.Trump said on Tuesday that Carney would be “very happy” after their trade talks at the White House, but did not indicate easing US tariffs. He also described Carney as a “world-class leader,” adding that the former central banker was “a nice man” who could also be “very nasty.”The two leaders shared several light-hearted moments, including laughter at Trump’s joke referencing a Canadian “merger,” alluding to his past remarks about Canada becoming the 51st US state.A statement from Carney following the visit indicated that few concrete agreements had been reached, noting only that both leaders acknowledged areas of competition as well as opportunities for collaboration.“We’re focused on building these new opportunities,” Carney said through a post on X.
