Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that his administration’s use of tariffs not only boosted America’s economy but also helped prevent a potential war between India and Pakistan.
“If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging. I use tariffs to stop wars,” Trump said as he responded to a question on whether he would shift his position on tariffs, insisting that his tariff strategy had been vindicated, both economically and diplomatically.

Referring to the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan amid India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, Trump claimed his intervention, tied to trade and tariffs, helped de-escalate the situation.
“If you look at India and Pakistan, they were ready to go at it. Seven planes were shot down. They were ready to go at it. And then nuclear powers. And I don’t want to say exactly what I said, but what I said was very effective. They stopped,” Trump said.
“…And that was based on tariffs. It was based on trade,” he added.
On the question of tariffs, the US President said, “Recently, they said they found billions of dollars, and they couldn’t understand. I said, check the tariff shelf. And they come in the next hour, and they said, sir, you’re right, it was from the tariffs. We’re a rich, really rich country again.”
Trump further reiterated that tariffs made the US both prosperous and influential.
“Tariffs are very important for the United States. We are a peacekeeper because of tariffs. Not only do we make, you know, hundreds of billions of dollars, but we’re a peacekeeper because of tariffs,” he said.
Donald Trump, on multiple occasions, has claimed that the US mediation, or his pressure over tariffs, helped in mediation between India and Paksitan in May this year.
He asserted that he threatened that if the fighting continued, the US would suspend trade, impose tariffs, etc.
However, India has maintained that the negotiation was reached directly through military channels between India and Pakistan, and not because of external mediation.
India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ was launched against Pakistan and its terror infrastructure in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
