'Hey turban head, go home': Sikh Canadian politician Hardeep Grewal faces racist attack, says it's exhausting and painful

Canadian politician Hardeep Grewal said he came under racist attack in Ontario.

Canadian politician Hardeep Grewal, a member of the provincial parliament of Ontario, said he was the victim of a racist attack in his country, where he was called ‘turban head’. The parliamentary assistant to the minister of transportation, Grewal, said this was not the first time that something like that happened, but he chose to post this on social media because it’s exhausting and painful. “Today in downtown Muskoka, while sharing ice cream with my family, two strangers decided to share their hate instead,” he wrote. “One yelled, ‘Hey turban head, go home,’ before speeding off. Another, walking by, said, “You all should die.” In that moment, I was reminded that the fight against hate is far from over. But our strength is louder. Ontario is our home. It belongs to all of us,” the politician said. “To my Sikh brothers and sisters, stay vigilant, stay proud, and stay strong. Hate never wins. Good will always triumph,” Grewal said. Canadian politicians condemned the racist attack and said Canadian society has no place of hate. “I’m deeply saddened and angered to read this. Hardeep represents the very best of what it means to serve others. He has dedicated his life to public service, working tirelessly to build stronger, safer, and more inclusive communities and a man whose kindness and humility leave a lasting impact on everyone he meets,” Sri Lankan origin Canada MPP for Scarborough Vijay Thanigasalam posted. Grewal was elected to the legislative assembly of Ontario in the 2022 provincial election. He represents the riding (electoral district) of Brampton East as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario. In 2022, he defeated NDP’s Gurratan Singh, brother of Jagmeet Singh. Grewal was re-elected in 2025 as well by over 6000 votes.
