‘Utterly condemnable’: PM Modi speaks to CJI Gavai, says attack ‘angered every Indian’

PM Modi condemned the shoe attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court, calling the incident “utterly condemnable” and saying it has “angered every Indian.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (October 6, 2025) condemned the shoe attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai inside the Supreme Court, saying the incident has “angered every Indian.”

During a court session, a lawyer allegedly approached the bench and tried to remove his shoe, apparently intending to throw it at Justice Gavai, but security stopped him.

“Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also praised Justice Gavai for remaining calm during the episode, noting that his composure reflected his commitment to justice and the Constitution.

A lawyer at the scene told ANI that the man was shouting, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (We will not tolerate the insult of Sanatan). Justice Gavai, however, stayed composed, urging the courtroom to remain focused and continuing the proceedings.

The incident followed remarks by the CJI in a separate case about restoring a seven-foot beheaded idol of Lord Vishnu at Khajuraho. While dismissing the case, he had suggested petitioners approach the deity directly and noted that the site is under the Archaeological Survey of India’s jurisdiction.

His comments had sparked debate on social media, with critics saying they hurt religious sentiments.
