A traditional garba welcome was accorded to Japan’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport & Tourism Hiromasa Nakano who arrived at Surat airport on Friday. Later union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Hiromasa Nakano, visited the Surat High-Speed Rail (HSR) construction site.

The Surat High Speed Rail Corridor is a component of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor. A new railway line that will connect the two major cities with a high-speed train travelling up to 320 km/hr.

The Surat bullet train station is currently under construction near Surat with the completion of Gujarat section likely to be done by August 26, 2026. Both Vaishnaw and Nakano reviewed key components of the project, including the track slab laying car and the track slab adjustment facility. They expressed satisfaction with the quality standards being followed and commended the rapid pace of construction.

About the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project

The new line aims to significantly reduce travel time and integrate the economies of the cities along its route. The line will serve cities like Mumbai, Thane, Vapi, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad. It is PM Narendra Modi’s dream to build high-speed bullet trains in India. It was started with a great fanfare with Japanese collaboration. But lack of cooperation from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government has delayed the project. Now Ashwini Vaishnaw is monitoring the project to bring this to reality as early as possible.

The visit of Japanese Minister to the Surat site reflects strong collaboration between India and Japan in implementing India’s first High-Speed Rail corridor.

The 508-km route covers Gujarat, Maharashtra and Dadra & Nagar Haveli with 12 stations planned – one each at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad and Sabarmati.

News18 had earlier reported how the Japanese government has agreed to introduce E10 Shinkansen trains in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. Japan currently operates the E5 series Shinkansen trains while the E10 is the next-generation upgrade. The E10 will be introduced simultaneously in India and Japan.
