A massive explosion broke out at a Chevron refinery in Los Angeles on Thursday, lighting up the entire sky. In the aftermath of the incident, the authorities in El Segundo, California, asked locals to stay indoors.

Several videos of the fire are also being circulated online, showing a fireball in the sky. One of the videos shows flames rising high into the night sky, lighting up the area with a fierce orange glow. Palm trees are silhouetted against the blaze.

A second video shows the sky is filled with an orange fireball that stretches across the horizon. Dark silhouettes of trees and buildings can be seen in the foreground, while the refinery flames cast a striking glow over the entire neighbourhood, making the night appear almost like daylight.

“I thought we got nuked or something,” Mike Rogers, an LA resident, told the New York Post.

As of now, neither Chevron nor local officials have explained what triggered the fire, which seemed to break out without warning.

LA County Supervisor Holly Mitchell reassured residents that the situation was under control. She said firefighters had managed to keep the flames confined to a single part of the refinery and confirmed there was no need for people to leave their homes. “It has been contained, and there is no cause for alarm for El Segundo or the surrounding areas,” Mitchell said.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was also updated about the incident. His office later announced, “Our office is coordinating in real time with local and state agencies to protect the surrounding community and ensure public safety,” in a message shared on X.
