At least nine people were killed and four law enforcement officials were injured after a blast struck Pakistan’s Peshawar on Thursday, according to the DAWN.

Peshawar Capital City Police Officer Mian Saeed’s office confirmed the incident, adding that it also targeted police officials.

“Initial investigation shows that the device that caused the blast was planted on the route of a police mobile,” he was quoted as saying by the DAWN.

According to the CCPO, the injured were rushed to a nearby medical facility by the rescue services and are still critical.

After the explosion, security forces rushed to the spot and sealed off the area. Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Masood Bangash said that officers had initiated detailed probe, with teams collecting evidence from the scene.

Investigations are ongoing to determine whether a remote-controlled device or an IED was used in the blast.

The attack highlights the repeated threat faced by security forces in Pakistan’s northwest, a region that has seen several attacks against police and military targets.

Notably, this is not the first such incident in recent weeks. Recently, on 30 September, a powerful explosion ripped through a busy street in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, near the Frontier Corps (FC) headquarters. That blast killed at least 10 people and injured 32 others, according to local reports.

Thursday’s attack in Peshawar has once again raised alarm over the safety of security personnel and the continuing challenge of militancy in the region. Authorities have not yet released further details about who may be behind the incident, but investigations are ongoing.
