Negotiations on US President Donald Trump’s peace proposal for Gaza continue in Doha as the world awaits a response from Hamas, which said on Wednesday that it will submit one in the next 36 to 72 hours.

According to top diplomatic sources, Hamas wants amendments to Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan, and on Tuesday (September 30), the group said it will study the plan, both within and with other Palestinian factions before responding.

Qatar, a key mediator, also said further talks are needed over details of the proposal for ending the nearly two-year war in Gaza. Negotiators from Qatar, Türkiye, and Egypt are consulting with Hamas in Doha, the sources told News18.

The sources said Hamas seeks international guarantees for the safety of its soldiers’ lives and wants an assurance from both Israel and the United States that its members will not be killed in Gaza, the West Bank, or globally, they said. The group insists that there should be no changes to the territorial boundaries of Gaza and the West Bank, and has made a demand for East Jerusalem as the capital of the new Palestinian state, they added.

A top Hamas source said the militant group is likely to agree to surrender its military role but wants to establish political offices in the proposed Palestinian state. It has also demanded that its unarmed fighters and their families be given shelter in Gaza and other Muslim countries, including Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey among others, the source said.

On Monday (September 29), the White House put out the text of the 20-point plan after Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that they agreed on it. The plan has received wide international support.

WHAT DOES TRUMP’S PLAN SAY?

The plan requires Hamas to release hostages, leave power in Gaza and disarm in return for the release of Palestinian prisoners and an end to fighting.

It guarantees the flow of humanitarian aid and promises reconstruction in Gaza, placing it and more than 2 million Palestinians under international governance. But it sets no path to Palestinian statehood.

The Palestinian government in the occupied West Bank said earlier it welcomed the plan, as did the governments of Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
