India’s passenger vehicle registrations recorded contrasting trends in September 2025, with most leading automakers seeing a decline in numbers. However, bucking the trend has been Tata Motors, which not only posted positive growth month-on-month but also moved up the ladder to claim the number two position in the pecking order, ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra.

OEMs AUG SEP
MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA LTD 1,30,242 1,22,785
TATA MOTORS PASSENGER VEHICLES LTD 37,988 40,068
MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LIMITED 42,253 37,451
HYUNDAI MOTOR INDIA LTD 45686 35,470
TOYOTA KIRLOSKAR MOTOR PVT LTD 26,453 20,051
KIA INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED 18,793 16,540

According to the Vahan registration data, Maruti Suzuki retained its leadership but saw volumes drop to 1,22,785 units in September compared to 1,30,242 in August. Hyundai Motor India, traditionally the second largest in the market, slipped further to 35,470 units from 45,686 the previous month. The sharp decline allowed Tata Motors to consolidate its presence in the top three, with registrations climbing to 40,068 in September from 37,988 in August. Mahindra, which had outpaced Tata in August, reported a sequential dip in volumes. Registrations fell to 37,451 units in September against 42,253 in August, pushing the SUV major to the third slot behind Tata. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Kia India too reported month-on-month declines. Toyota’s volumes eased to 20,051 units from 26,453, while Kia slipped from 18,793 to 16,540.

The highlight of September was Tata Motors’ sustained demand in SUVs and electrics. The company’s total registrations included 6,083 EVs, while Mahindra added 3,041 EVs to its tally. This indicates that even amid a broader slowdown, the shift towards electric mobility is gradually picking up momentum.

With the festive season ahead, industry stakeholders expect demand to revive, although the extent of the recovery will depend on consumer sentiment, financing conditions, and the pace of new model launches. The market realignment in September also underlines the competitive dynamics in India’s PV space, where Tata’s performance has created fresh churn in the established rankings.
