'RSS stood with British': Congress says INC 'fought for freedom'; reminds PM Modi of VD Savarkar's allegiance

NEW DELHI: Congress questioned Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) contribution to the nation as it celebrated its centenary on Wednesday with Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming the journey “glorious.”The grand old party dug into history, pointing out RSS ideologue VD Savarkar’s “friendly relations with the British” while Congress “fought for freedom.””Congress fought for freedom, RSS stood with the British,” the party noted. “I feel no hesitation in maintaining friendly relations with the British government,” party quoted Savarkar. “RSS, an organisation that divides the nation: During the time of independence, its leaders neither went to jail nor were ever banned by the British. In 1942, when the entire country was imprisoned during the ‘Quit India Movement’ against the British, the RSS was aiding the British in suppressing this movement,” INC said.”It is our nation’s misfortune that workers of a communal and hateful organisation like the RSS are directly running the government. Those who have always advocated for Manusmriti over the Constitution are now becoming Chief Ministers and Prime Ministers in our country. How can we expect social, political, or economic justice from them?” it added. Earlier in the day, PM Modi praised the Sangh for pursuing the “grand objective nation-building.” “Just as human civilisations flourish along the banks of mighty rivers, similarly, hundreds of lives have blossomed and thrived along the banks and in the flow of the RSS. Since its formation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has pursued a grand objective. That objective has been nation-building,” he said.
