Telangana is heading into local body elections, and even before polling dates are formally announced, the Model Code of Conduct is now in force. The elections, which will cover 565 mandals across 31 districts, will be held in five phases, with nominations open until October 9. Voting will elect representatives for MPTCs, ZPTCs, sarpanches, and ward members, and the process will conclude on November 11.

What The Election Code Means

Once the Election Code kicks in, restrictions apply to both government schemes and financial transactions to ensure free and fair polls. From September 29, stricter checks are being enforced to curb the movement of unaccounted cash.

Authorities have set a clear limit: no individual can carry more than Rs 50,000 in cash without valid proof. If caught with even a rupee more and no documents, the money will be seized immediately.

Small amounts: Seized money will be deposited with the revenue authorities.

Large amounts: Information will be passed on to the Income Tax (IT) and GST departments, and the cash will be moved to court custody.

Officials are urging both citizens and public representatives to carry the necessary documentation when traveling with money.

When You Can Carry More than Rs 50,000

There are exceptions for those with genuine reasons — such as medical emergencies, education fees, weddings, or business transactions. In such cases, supporting documents must be carried at all times.

For example:

  • Bank withdrawals: Show your account book or ATM slip.
  • Business transactions: Carry bills or receipts related to the sale of goods, crops, or services.
  • Property deals: Keep all registered documents handy.
  • Educational fees or hospital expenses: Carry fee receipts or medical papers as proof.

Without proper evidence, officials are empowered to seize the cash on the spot.

Why This Matters

During elections, authorities increase surveillance to prevent the use of cash for vote-buying or illegal campaigning. For common people, this often means stricter checks at highways, airports, and even local markets. Knowing the rules helps avoid unnecessary harassment.

The bottom line: If you must carry more than Rs 50,000 in cash during election season, always keep the paperwork ready. Otherwise, it may end up being booked and seized.
