Long Speech On Gandhi Jayanti
Good morning to our respected principal, teachers, and dear friends.
We are here to commemorate the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Born in 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is recognised as the ‘Father of the Nation’ for his pivotal contributions to India’s freedom struggle against the oppressive British colonial forces. Gandhi dedicated his life to the service of the countrymen and helped India attain its independence.
Graduating from law school in the United Kingdom in 1888, Gandhi moved to South Africa to begin his practise. Upon returning, he launched the Satyagraha, or civil disobedience movement, with the ultimate aim to liberate India from the British regime while following the difficult path of ahimsa or non-violence.
Gandhi promoted Indian culture and traditional clothing, wearing a khadi dhoti and living a very simple life away from the luxuries. He believed in his values of compassion and sacrifice and didn’t let anything come in their way. Initiating the Non-Cooperation Movement, he encouraged Indians to join the struggle for independence rather than collaborating with the British. Gandhi devoted a significant part of his life to the service of the nation.
Despite being imprisoned multiple times, he never gave up. Through Non-Cooperation, Civil Disobedience and Quit India movements, Gandhi managed to evoke the national pride and collective efforts towards freedom. One of his biggest initiatives included the 400-kilometre Dandi March, also known as the Salt Satyagraha, in 1930 to challenge the British salt monopoly. Later on, the Quit India movement called for the complete withdrawal of British forces from India.
Gandhi’s values and accomplishments continue to inspire the countrymen even today. Apart from freedom from the British, he fought for the eradication of the social malaise of untouchability and advocated for women’s rights.
