Police Lathicharge Protesters After Violence Breaks Out In Bareilly During ‘I Love Muhammad’ March

NEW DELHI: Bareily Police on Tuesday arrested one of the key accused named Tazim after the “I love Muhammad” campaign snowballed into violent clashes in the district.According to SP city Manush Pareek, Tanzim opened fire at the police as it tried arrest him. He added that a total of 72 people have been arrested in this case.”Total 72 people have been arrested in this case till today. We have information about the involvement of one Tazim. He is known to be a cattle smuggler. He has been to jail under the Gangster Act. When the Police tried to arrest him, he fired at the Police,” Pareek said.”He has been arrested now, and a country-made weapon was recovered from him. Some of the people were from outside the city,” he added.The police superintendent further said that 10 FIRs have been registered over 26th September violence,”Over 26th September violence, 10 FIRs were registered,” he said.This comes after an unrest began in Bareily after authorities cancelled a proposed protest over the ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster controversy, called by Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. The protests were triggered by a controversy over “I Love Muhammad” posters that began in Kanpur during a Barawafat procession and drew objections from right-wing Hindu groups.FIRs were filed and similar protests and crackdowns spread to several districts in Uttar Pradesh, as well as to Uttarakhand and Karnataka. Maulana Tauqeer Raza had warned that the protest would proceed “at any cost.”
