A viral post on X has reignited the debate over public behaviour and civic sense among Indian travellers abroad.

The post, made by a user named Naresh on Monday, describes his frustrating experience at the premium lounge of Nairobi airport, where he claims two fellow Indians were speaking loudly on their phones for over 15 minutes.

In a 1.7-minute video that Naresh shared alongside his post, a woman’s voice can be heard clearly as she carries on a conversation at high volume, disturbing the otherwise calm setting of the lounge. Though only her voice is audible, the post mentions a man as well, also on a call.

“These are well to do people. What’s wrong with us as a nation. Why are we so ill mannered?” wrote Naresh in his post, which has since drawn thousands of reactions, both in support and in defence of the behaviour.

“Waiting in the lounge in Nairobi airport and only two other Indians besides me. Both are talking loudly non stop on their cell phones since 15 minutes. A man and a woman. In a premium lounge!” he added.

“Don’t we realize that we are disturbing others. And giving a bad name to our country?,” he further asked.

Naresh clarified that his intent was not to shame anyone in particular but to raise a broader concern. “We need to address this issue. But how?”

The post quickly gained traction on X, drawing strong reactions from users across the platform. Many agreed with Naresh’s observations, sharing similar frustrations from their own travel experiences.

One user wrote, “It’s like we are allergic to civic sense. When we leave the country we are representative of our nation. We should try to show our best side.”

Another user challenged Naresh’s framing, writing, “Two people make a nation. Using outlier incidents to blame is an interesting trait of brown sepoys.”

A third commenter added a practical example from air travel, noting that such behaviour isn’t limited to lounges. “Naresh when you fly back to India..make video after plane lands..most people, although behaviour has improved recently, will unbuckle the seatbelt even though seatbelt sign is ON.. some fools even start reaching for the overbin bags.. no respect for rules or concern for safety.”

Another user highlighted a broader pattern of public conduct. “This is so annoying when Indian from India they talk so loudly on the phone sometimes they practically sound like they’re screaming or arguing… Be mindful of your environment in your conversation is with the person you’re talking to not to be heard or to disturb everybody else in the room.”
